Potato, Ham, and Cheese Bake

This homey bake is a wonderful way to make use of leftover holiday ham, or could be made up with a ham steak purchased just for the recipe. Either way, you’ll need just a green salad to serve alongside for an ultimately comforting meal!

Potato, Ham, and Cheese Bake

1 oz. butter (2 tbs.)
1 tbs. vegetable oil
1 large onion, diced
9 oz. cooked ham, cut into pieces no large than ½”
2 tbs. chopped parsley
3 lb. 5 oz. yellow potatoes
9 fl. oz. heavy cream
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
4 oz. grated cheddar (or mozzarella or Monterey Jack)

Heat the oven to 350°F. Put a frying pan over a medium-high heat and add the butter and oil to it. Stir in the onion and cook for 5-6 minutes, then add the ham and parsley season with pepper, and remove from the heat.

Put the cream and garlic in a small saucepan and heat to just below the boiling point. Season with some salt and pepper, and set aside.

Slice the potatoes as thinly as possible (use a mandolin if you have one).

Grease a pan (8½” x 11”) with butter. Pour 3 tbs. of the cream mixture into the bottom, then arrange a layer of sliced potatoes on top, followed by a few tbs. of the ham mix and a couple of tbs. of grated cheese. Season with pepper. Add another layer of potatoes, then more cream, ham mix and cheese, and season again with pepper. Continue until you have used up all the ingredients, finishing with a layer of potatoes, then a sprinkling of cheese. Grate pepper over the top.

Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 40 minutes.
